More about English Wine

Many of us probably don't know much about wine from our own country or how good it is, so here are a few facts to whet your appetite.

Is there such a thing as English Wine?

Yep, there certainly is, and it's probably much bigger business than you realise. Before we did our homework, images of recycled bottles of home-grown wine doing the rounds at summer fetes sprang to mind! But that couldn't be further from the truth, the wine business in England is actually pretty impressive stuff, and it's giving other wine producing regions a good run for their money!

The Basics
England has been commercially harvesting wine for over 50 years, and has established itself as a successful and thriving business, with sales currently at an all time high.

There are around 400 commercial vineyards in England and Wales covering approximately 2000 acres of land. Nearly all of these are located in the south of England and Wales, and most are small vineyards covering less than 5 acres. The largest English vineyard is Denbies in Dorking, Surrey, and covers around 265 acres

Growing Grapes
Growing grapes in England is understandably risky business with our notoriously unpredictable weather! But that can actually work in our favour, as vines that have had to battle with difficult and unpredictable climates may produce smaller yields, but create some of the best quality wines. The climate and soil conditions in England dictate the types of grape that can be successfully grown and harvested. Black grape varieties are the most difficult to grow as they need warmer weather to ripen. This is why English wine is predominantly white and sparkling wines, with around 10% being red wine. England does very well at producing sparkling wines, and recently beat over 55 countries to win the title of Best Sparkling Wine in the World!

The British versus English Wine
One of the biggest problems English wine producers have to face is our total ignorance, as most of us have probably never even tasted an English wine before, or if we have and it was at that summer fete, it may have put us off for life! Well, we're up for giving them a break and our aim is to educate us motley crew as to what's out there in the world of English wine. Firstly, let's just get one thing cleared up. British wine is not necessarily the same as English wine. If you scan the supermarket shelves, you will probably see dirt cheap wine labelled as British, around the £3-4 mark, and English wine around the £6-7 mark. As the price suggests, there is a big difference between them. British wine is not actually made from grapes in England. It's more commonly made in huge factory sized tanks and mixes a range of grape varieties from all over the place at a low cost. In contrast, English wine has by law to be grown and made in England, and is therefore a totally different ball game, so let's not get the two confused. Taste English Wine

So now we have the facts, let's get on with the tasting!
