Top 10 Wine Tips

1. Don't store your white wine in the fridge

for more than a few hours before you plan to drink it. Keeping a white wine kept at artificially low temperatures for days or weeks will have a bad effect on the wines aroma and taste.

2. The quickest way to chill white wine

is to put the bottle in a container of ice and water - this chills it in half an hour, while the fridge will take about 2 hours - put the ones for later in the fridge!

3. The quickest way to warm a bottle of red wine

to room temperature is to warm glasses or a jug with hot water, dry out and then pour the wine!

4. The key to opening a sparkling wine

is to hold the bottle at a 45 degree angle, point it away from people, furniture, windows, kids, dogs etc. Remove the wire cage, hold the cork still and gently twist the bottle with your other hand - this way you have more control over the rate the cork comes out! Et voila you have unharmed friends, furniture, pets…and a full bottle of bubbly to drink!

5. If you've broken the cork

and it won't come out of the bottle - don't panic! Push the cork into the bottle and then just pour the wine into another vessel, using a long instrument like a skewer to keep the cork out of the way.

6. Don't rush a red!

Always give red wine time to breathe once you've opened it. Desperate for a glass…? OK, then pour the bottle into a glass jug, as it gives it more chance to mix with the oxygen in the air, and then pour yourself a well earned glass.

7. I know it's tempting to fill your glass,

but the so-called correct way to serve wine is to fill up to a third of the glass with wine. It just leaves plenty of room in the glass to swirl the wine allowing the flavours to develop more fully and allowing you to impress with your new found wine knowledge from our 'How to Taste Wine' page!

8. If you've can't find where you put the cork,

but you still have some wine left over - then just seal the bottle top with some trusty cling film and a rubber band. But don't leave the remaining wine for longer than a day or two…. as if you would!

9. Keep leftover wine in the fridge,

as once a bottle has been opened, the wine starts to react with air and the wine will go off - the coldness of the fridge slows this down.

10. When drinking with food,

try and match your wine to your dish. It really can make all the difference. For some top tips on some of our favourite food and wine combinations.
